BLOG: Behind the Scenes: Writing my book: Pathway to Disability Caregiving
Caregiving has been a cornerstone of my life for over 20 years. Over the years, I’ve worn many hats in the disability sector, from disability support worker to systems analyst, consultant, and now caregiver coach.
It began with caring for my mum—a deeply personal experience that shaped my understanding of the unique challenges caregivers face.
Throughout these roles, one thing has remained constant: my desire to make caregiving more manageable for others. Whether it’s designing systems, creating policies, or coaching family carers, I’ve always sought to empower caregivers with the tools and knowledge they need. Writing Pathway to Disability Caregiving is a culmination of this journey—a guide that combines personal stories, professional insights, and practical resources to support caregivers at every stage.
Why am I Writing This Book?
This book is not just a resource; it’s a reflection of my passion for improving care. Over the years, I’ve specialised in creating systems, policies, and procedures that streamline caregiving processes. I’ve conducted gap analyses to identify where care could be improved and worked tirelessly to bridge those gaps.
As a consultant for family carers and a coach for caregivers, I’ve seen firsthand how the right systems and strategies can transform lives. Writing this book allows me to share everything I’ve learned, making it accessible to a wider audience. It’s about spreading the word, sharing stories, and providing expert advice that comes from real-world practice.
What’s Inside the Book?
Pathway to Disability Caregiving is designed as a comprehensive guide for caregivers, divided into three parts:
Part 1: Caring for Yourself as a Caregiver
Self-care is the foundation of effective caregiving. This section explores strategies for managing stress, setting boundaries, and finding balance. It’s about recognising that caregivers can’t pour from an empty cup and providing tools to help them recharge.Part 2: Setting Up Systems of Care
This part reflects my expertise in systems and processes, offering step-by-step guidance on setting up care plans, managing health documentation, hiring staff and navigating financial supports and lot more. It’s both a roadmap and a compass, guiding you from A to Z in creating efficient and effective systems that ease stress and enhance care outcomes.Part 3: Tools and Resources
This section is packed with practical tools—worksheets, checklists, and forms to help caregivers put the strategies from the book into action. These resources simplify the process, making caregiving more organised and less overwhelming.
The Challenges of Writing
Writing this book has been an incredible journey, but it hasn’t been without its challenges. Distilling 20 years of experience into a format that’s both comprehensive and engaging has been no small task.
One of the biggest hurdles has been balancing emotional depth with practical advice. Caregiving is deeply personal and I want readers to feel seen and understood while also walking away with actionable solutions. It’s been a delicate balance, one that I believe will make the book truly impactful.
Another challenge has been ensuring the content is accessible to a wide audience. Every caregiving journey is unique, and I’ve worked hard to create a guide that resonates with caregivers from all walks of life, whether they’re caring for a loved one at home or navigating professional support from other services and agencies.
